Program staff trainings

UW–Madison youth programs and activities require all staff, including employees, volunteers, and contractors, to complete specific trainings before working with youth. Use the links below to access online training programs and to register for courses. Role Classification in Youth Activities

Authorized Custodian A university employee who operates and is responsible for the logistics of a youth activity, ensures compliance with applicable policy and laws, may be counted in the supervision ratio, and who has been authorized for this role by completing required screening and training.

Authorized Assistant Custodian An authorized adult who is counted in the supervision ratio for a youth activity and has been authorized for supervision responsibility by completing required screening and training.

Authorized Adult A university employee (any appointment type) or volunteer who interacts with minors, within the scope of their job or under the direction of the university, and who has been authorized for this interaction by completing required screening and training. Does not count in the supervision ratio.

Guest Speaker An individual who is invited to make a presentation, conduct a demonstration, or facilitate instruction during a youth activity for a limited and defined time (such as a one-time-only basis or a scheduled presentation series). A guest speaker is not required to become an authorized adult only if all the following conditions are enforced:

  1. The guest speaker is never left alone with youth.
  2. A guest speaker does not share contact information with Youth or encourage contact after the activity.

Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect (online)

UW–Madison employees, volunteers, and contractors who work with minors are required to follow the rules outlined in Governor’s Executive Order 54. This includes reporting cases of suspected child abuse or neglect to the proper officials.

Required: Authorized Adults (every two years), Authorized Assistant Custodian (every two years), Authorized Custodian (every two years)

Sexual Misconduct and Clery Crimes in Youth Activities: Reporting and Prevention (online)

This course combines and abbreviates elements from three other trainings: Preventing Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence at UW–Madison, Responsible Employee, and Campus Security Authority. It is required for University employees and volunteers whose duties include supervision and/or custodial care of minor(s) in a youth activity.

Required: Authorized Assistant Custodian (every year)

Responsible Employee (RE)

Authorized Custodians are considered Responsible Employees (REs) while working in a youth program. These individuals are required to report violations of the UW–Madison Policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence.

Campus Security Authority (CSA)

Authorized Custodians are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) while working in a youth program. These individuals are required to report certain crimes on or near the UW–Madison campus.
