Staff Training for Youth Protection

Who needs to complete training?

Adults involved in UW-Madison youth activities, including employees, volunteers, UW-Madison students, and contractors, must complete required trainings before working with youth. Use the links below to access online trainings. If you have questions about training requirements, please contact your direct supervisor or email youthprotection@wisc.edu.

Authorized Assistant Custodian
An adult working or volunteering in a youth activity or third-party youth activity who has been authorized to provide custodial care following completion of screening and training requirements.

Sexual Misconduct and Clery Crimes in Youth Activities: Reporting and Prevention (annually)

Authorized Adult
An adult working or volunteering in a youth activity or third-party youth activity who has been authorized to interact with youth participants following completion of screening and training requirements but is not authorized to provide custodial care.
Youth Protection Training for Authorized Adults (every two years)
Guest Speaker
Individual who is invited to make a presentation, conduct a demonstration, or facilitate instruction during a youth activity for a limited and defined time (such as a one-time-only basis or a scheduled presentation series), is never left alone with youth participants, and does not share personal contact information.

Responsible Employee

Authorized Custodians are considered Responsible Employees (REs) while working in a youth program and are required to report violations of the UW–Madison Policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence.

Note: Authorized Custodians must be assigned Responsible Employee training by their immediate supervisor or a designated learning partner through Workday. If you need assistance with enrollment in Workday, please contact titleix_coordinator@wisc.edu.

Sexual Misconduct and Clery Crimes in Youth Activities: Reporting and Prevention

Course combines and abbreviates elements from three other trainings: Preventing Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence at UW–Madison, Responsible Employee and Campus Security Authority. Required for university employees and volunteers whose duties include supervision and/or custodial care of minors.

Required for: Authorized Assistant Custodians

Campus Security Authority

Authorized Custodians are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) while working in a youth program. These individuals are required to report certain crimes on or near the UW–Madison campus.

Youth Protection Training for Authorized Assistant Custodians

Required for: 

  • Authorized Assistant Custodian (complete every two years)
  • Authorized Custodian for activities that provide custodial care (complete every two years)

Youth Protection Training for Authorized Adults

Required for:

  • Authorized Adults (complete every two years)
  • Authorized Custodian for non-custodial youth activities (complete every two years)
